Top Five Affirmations for Autistic Children

Top Five Affirmations for Autistic Children

When I was a teacher, I used affirmations often with my students. I noticed then that students with ASD would gravitate towards saying them and enjoying it. It wasn't until I was a parent of an ASD child that I saw how impactful it really is.

Autistic children go through so many moments in any given day where they do not fit the "norm" or where they must exhaust themselves to read social cues. Even when they put forth tremendous effort, they may not always feel like they have done enough or that they fit in.

In those moments, affirmations can be life saving, confidence building, and comfort seeking phrases. There are power in words, so equipping ASD children with affirming, positive word phrases can change their outlook (and ours as well!)

With my child, we like to do affirmations in the morning in front of the mirror, before any challenging or exciting tasks, and at bedtime. You may find different things work, but the one thing that is crucial is you do it in a routinized way. This will make it a regular part of the day (so you don't forget it or put it off) and make these positive phrases a constant in your child's life.

You may also find phrases that are more specific to your context or that feel more empowering for your child. Use it! Nobody knows your kiddo the way you do. The important thing is that you set aside time regularly to practice affirmations. That is why we offer products with affirmations on them, to surround our child and your children with positive messages that empower and build up all day long!

Here are the five affirmations we've used with our child most:

  1. I am brave
  2. I am kind
  3. I am smart
  4. I am patient
  5. I am loved

These simple phrases can change an outlook in a moment, but imagine the power and impact of doing this daily for a year. Your child will believe each phrase more and more with every time practicing it. The comfort of routine mixed with the empowering tone of each phrase is sure to make a positive difference.

Start practicing affirmations today! Surround your child with these strong messages and watch the benefits.
